1st Up – Beer Social Tomorrow Evening!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n

For our third beer social we’re skipping the expense of a public tavern and going to a house with a pool (and a racing simulator), but none of those weird “foo foo” beers will be served (there will be Coors, 805, etc. so if you want a craft beer, you may want to bring your own). Don’t forget your swimsuit and a towel… maybe we’ll get a game of pool volleyball going. There may even be some light food to wash down the beer.<\/span> <\/span>But you need to RSVP soon to Doug Taylor to reserve one of the spots<\/span> <\/span>(limited to the first thirty that respond). Join us on Thursday, June 19 for our next luncheon. <\/span> This month we will be welcoming Dr. Marc Beutel, and Dr. Siddaiah Yarra from UC Merced they will be talking about the growing Civil Engineering Department at UC Merced and what to expect in the future. They will also be talking about the newly chartered ASCE Student Chapter on the UC Merced campus. The student chapter was officially chartered in May 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of students come on out and also meet some of our scholarship recipients. We will be introducing you to them at this month’s luncheon as well. So, come on out and hear all about the wonderful things that the next generation is doing and how UC Merced is going to help groom the next generation of engineers. <\/span><\/p>\n

A little history about UC Merced: <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Juan Sánchez Muñoz, Ph.D., took office as the fourth permanent chancellor of UC Merced on July 1, 2020 — the first graduate of the University of California to lead the campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

UC Merced originated in a 1988 decision by the UC Board of Regents to begin planning for a new university in the San Joaquin Valley to meet long-term enrollment demand. After a process that reviewed locations throughout the valley, the Merced site was chosen in 1995.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1998, Carol Tomlinson-Keasey was named senior associate to the president of the University of California, to lead planning and development of UC Merced; the Regents approved her as the campus’ first chancellor a year later.<\/span><\/p>\n

Faculty members began to arrive in 2003 with graduate students in tow and began setting up research laboratories and programs at UC Merced’s ancillary research facility on the former Castle Air Force Base, biding their time until buildings were ready on campus. The first graduate courses began in fall 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n

The campus celebrated the arrival of its first undergraduate students in September 2005. That fall semester saw most activities on campus take place in the Valley Terrace housing complex and the Leo & Dottie Kolligian Library. The first Classroom and Office Building and the Science and Engineering Building opened in January 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n
