About the American Society of Civil Engineers

The American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 160,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest national civil engineering society.

ASCE stands at the forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society’s economic and social engine – the built environment – while protecting and restoring the natural environment. Through the expertise of its active membership, ASCE is a leading provider of technical and professional conferences and continuing education, the world’s largest publisher of civil engineering content, and an authoritative source for codes and standards that protect the public.

The Society advances civil engineering technical specialties through nine dynamic institutes and leads with its many professional- and public-focused programs.

Organization

ASCE is divided into ten (10) geographic regions. Regions 1-9 comprise North America including the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Region 10 is an international region covering 10,000+ members in all countries outside of North America.

Regions 1-9 are further split into 3 national regions:

Western Region: Regions 8 & 9
Central Region: Regions 3, 6, & 7
Eastern Region: Regions 1, 2, 4, & 5

The San Jose Branch is located within Region 9 which is the only region comprised solely of one (1) state – California.

Region 9

Region 9 is the only ASCE geographic region that encompasses only one state, California, due to its 18,000+ membership. The region consists of four (4) sections: Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco. Sections operate locally and govern the Branches, Younger Member Forums, Life Member Group, and Student Chapters that operate under their purview.

The San Jose Branch is located within the San Francisco Section and serves the counties of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey. The Branch supports the San Jose Younger Member Forum and the ASCE Student Chapters at San Jose State University, Santa Clara University, and Stanford University.
